Why install Linux?

Why would people try to install Linux on their game consoles and mp3 players?

mikau is most likely the closest to a correect answer. People do not like Microsoft because they believe it is a corporate monster.



Now Linux is mostly Freeware or shareware. It is mostly "Open Source" which means that you can personally modify the software with your own codes to make it work exactly as you want it to. There is only a few parts of Linux software that cannot be legally modifed, it has to do with the Linux Kernel, but most other parts are the owners choice on how or what you want to make the software do for you.



Since it is Open Source and you can modify it easily once you know Linux then you can set Linux up for making your own software programs, for testing software, it actually is kind of endless what you can make linux do for you. I have tried Linux but I only know a little coding (Enough for me to program/configure my Tivo unit modifications). I was not too sold on Linux though so far, it felt like when computers used DOS and you had to program the coding yourself. I am sticking with Microsoft for now. Another issue I found with Linux is that it was not as easy to find the necessary hardware drivers for quite a bit of hardware. You had to search the internet and hope that the person that wrote the hardware driver coding did it right and you are not installing malware or soemthing. At least with Microsofts Windows it searchs for the necesasary drivers for you and then once you allow the download it can automatically apply the driver to your PC.



So Joe Schmoe can create his own video games, or Jane can write her own video software, without having to BUY expensive software from a corporate giant..

Linux might be Free! At least that's what people think until you have to add those tricky little PlugIns you know languages like Java plugs and C/C++ , JGraphs and small stuff like that. There's a couple of sites below you can check out, you know a little light reading. Have fun!
