Well, both are very good units. Personally I like the Garmin. The turn call outs, the maps (even optional ones) the basic engine. I just think its a better GPS. Again both are good and who ever answers is just providing that opinion.
Check the online reviews of both the SPECIFIC units you are looking to compare. To attempt to compare just the names won't get you much as Garmin has many different units as does TomTom. You really need to be specific with your quest to get the RIGHT answer for YOUR USE!
I think I like Garmin because I fly, and they are hands down leaders in the aviation market! Just no one else compares. The units they make are in Corporate Jets and small Cessnas. I figure if they can guide a flight they should be able to get me on the right road. (not really a fair comparison but just an observation about the two companies - Tom Tom isn't even in the aviation or boating models.)

Easily Tomtom, especially the Go 720 over the Garmin nuvi 220. Tomtom has Map share - free map correction updates, corrected by other users. In fact, this week it got its one millionth map improvement! Also the Tomtom is less clunkier and more stylish for any car. I tend to think the graphics are a whole lot better too. good luck!

I have heard that TomTom Customer service is non-existant and they don't respond to emails or phone calls.. I think only snail-mail.. or they take months to respond. Plus I have heard that updating the maps is a pain or they don't have new maps.
I have the Garmin 660 I think it's amazing.. I bought it from amazon I couldn't believe they had it like $400 off and I got it for the same price as the lower low models ..
