You need a step UP converter to raise 110v UP to 220v, not a step down converter (which goes the other way)!

It's a little easier to find the travel converter you need while you're still in the country you are coming from, but you can find what you need at an electronics-oriented store like Radio Shack. Or, of course (if you're willing to wait for delivery), the web.

Other stores in the USA may only carry the step-down transformer (for people in the USA planning to travel) -- unless they carry the type of converter that can do both, step-up and step-down (some have a switch, some are even automatic!).

Define "appliance". If it's a very high-powered device (perhaps a hair dryer or a kitchen appliance), a step-up converter of sufficient wattage may exceed the cost of purchasing a new proper 120V appliance. If it's a device with a switchmode power supply (many electronic gadgets), it may work at the lower voltage without a converter at all.

A little detail would point us all in a better direction. I will, however, agree that you'll need a step-UP converter.

Good answer. I've noticed cost on converters goes up fast if you need many watts. Hopefully his 'appliance' isn't a toaster. One thing I'd like to know, can you tell me in what region of the US is 110/220 volts commonplace? thanks

if you are living in Hotels and travelling, then a transformer may be useful. remember the cycles in USA is 60 not 50 and that might affect your appliance. if you will be in a "permanent" locations like a home or office, the electrician can easily bring in a 220 volt outlet.

what is the appliance? 208 volt can be acheived by using two phases.
