I don't really know what I need for recording on my computer. I understand that I'll need a microphone but what things do I have to run it through before my computer, how do I connect it to my computer, what software is out there and how would I know if my computer can handle it (the software)? I'm having trouble finding straight answers online and your help is appreciated.

Heya,

What system you choose to use is entirely dependent on what kinds of things you'll be recording:

1. many instruments, vocals, drums (ie traditional band). I would recommend looking into one of Pro Tools systems with multiple line-ins that have Digital IO (interfaces).

2. one instrument/keyboard or voice. If you have a laptop, you'll need an external Digital IO. M-Audio offers a few value options. And you'll need a mic for the vocals, if you are doing predominantly vocals, I would highly recommending finding a descent Large diaphragm condensor mic.

3. DAW = digital audio workstation. What kind of music? if it's electronica, get Ableton Live, Steinberg Cubase or Logic. If it's live music try Logic, Pro Tools, or Steinberg Cubase.

Since it's Cyber Monday, Musician's Friend has gads of deals, you can see all their offers in Digital Audio online at pungle.org. Plus, if you use pungle, a portion of what you buy will help the charity you pick (100% Free to the user). Give a little, and get yourself hooked up!

Ok, here is something straight and simple. You need to build a home studio. For that you need:

* Microphone + Pop filter + PreAmp

* SoundCard - Interface

* Cables

* Recording Software

* Studio Monitors

* Acoustic foam

If you are a beginner or if you are on a tight budget, you should focus on the microphone and on audio interface. AT2020 USB version is another good alternative.

features (via amazon)

The new AT2020 USB offers studio-quality articulation and intelligibility with modern convenience. It plugs right into your computer's USB port, and functions seamlessly with your favorite recording software. Equipped with a USB digital output, the AT2020 USB is perfect for home studio recording, field recording, podcasting, and voiceover use.
