Which scanner is the absolute best, in all areas, for less than $200?

depends what you need to scan.
The absolute best is rotary type but it's far more than you can spend.
They all do a decent job, so what i think is important is how easily it does what you need.
An automatic sheet feeder is very useful if you want to archive lots of documents.
if you are doing photo work, you want high definition and color accuracy, but you would be better off with a film scanner. Nikon makes nice ones with some digital ICE technology that removes the dust/scratches (at a cost: slightly softer image)
Some flat bed scanner also have transparency adapters to scan large format negatives or slides.
I like the HP ones. do a decent jobn and comes with good software partuclarly the module to save as pdf with OCR text.
