I need a handheld scanner radio that will pick up 900-910MHz. All the ones I found stop at around 500. I used to have one that was a Radio Shack brand I lost it. I can spend up to $30.

You will have to get Very Lucky to replace your lost scanner for $30.

I wouldn't even try.

Universal Radio has a good selection of scanners.

Check their online catalog to get an idea of what you can get for what price.

I own:

Uniden Bearcat BCT15X tabletop / mobile [900 MHz capable] ...Paid $220 / new in 2011

Radio Shack Pro-95 portable (made by GRE) [900 MHz capable] ...Paid $200 / new in 2004

Radio Shack Pro-404 portable (made by GRE); currently available as Whistler WS-1010 ...Paid $4 / used in 2013

Radio Shack Pro-38 portable [1988 10-channel programmable] (made by Uniden) ...Paid $1 / used in 2003

Try looking for a used one at garage and estate sales and thrift stores,

and Make Sure It Works Before You Buy It.

Sad story:

Years ago, I bought a Uniden table / mobile at an estate sale for $20.

Yes, I tried it out first, and it worked.

In fact, it was plugged in and operating when I first saw it.

The box and all the other original stuff were there.

So I shut it off, packed it all up, and thought I'd gotten a good deal.

Well, when I set it up later that evening,

it lit up but the display was blank and it wouldn't do anything but hiss.

Guess what?

It was no longer supported by Uniden.

No paperwork of any kind available,

no idea who might be able to make it work.

So, be Very careful and Really check out anything used that you run across.

I doubt you will find a 900MHz scanner for $30 unless you get lucky at a pawn shop or swapmeet. Many agencies went to digital P25 systems that cannot be scanned with analog scanners. Try this; Go to "radioreference.com", join the forum and ask who wants to sell you what you want. 500MHz scanners have been out of mode for about 20 years.Maybe you'll find a BC855xlt somebody is throwing away that still works. That's a table model. If you find a BC246t, haggle for that 900MHz analog trunk tracking scanner.

if you are good at electronics ... you may build an oscillator 900 mhz with varicaps ..then a ramp voltage does scanning ...after that design a superhet mixer...with I.F. output ... connec it to a receiver ..

You will not find any NEW scanner for that freq range for $30. Here is the cheapest NEW one:
