Or do they add real value with their brand that you are prepared to pay for?

The extra you pay for Apple stuff is for their excellent industrial design and ease of use. I'd gladly pay extra for a nice looking notebook that is easy to use, rather than a crummy looking dark gray notebook with Windows. The iPod is more money because of the excellent interface and the ease of use between it and a computer -- not to mention the integration between the iTunes software and iTunes Music Store. All of this, the design, the ease of use is what makes Apple stuff worth the extra cost.
This could be said about Sony stuff in the past, but nowadays, Sony stuff is pretty much "me too" when compared with what's on the market. I don't think the extra cost on a Sony product is worth it.
