Likely the port does not have enough power for the drive, or the drive is in an incompatible format, such as NTFS or HFS.

It depends on the player what it supports over its USB port.

I had the same problem on holiday, the DVD player wouldn't recognize the files on my ext hard drive but it recognized the films that was not in files & played them without any problem, so it must be something to do with the films that are in a file format & yet it plays fine through my TV & DVD (which are both up to date appliances) player at home reading & playing anything on my hard drive, the only thing I can suggest is take the films out of the file & they should play fine if not then it is your TV or DVD player, that's the best I can do for you. Cheers

you should use a usb pen drive to have a test, some dvd players have usb function, but can't detect big external hard drive, just support small usb pen drive, so you should have a test. And you should note, if your dvd player have a usb port, means it can play right profile divx or xvid avi movies on usb pen drive, so if you want to play movies on your dvd player through usb port, you'd better convert your movies to right profile divx or xvid avi movies for your dvd player, if you don't know how to do that, so easy, you can use rz dvd creator to help you, it can convert any formats movies to right profile divx or xvid avi movies(select divx or xvid as target format) for a dvd player which have usb port. By the way, I don't know the exact model of your dvd player, so can't give your a exact answer, maybe both divx or xvid avi files are right for your dvd player, or at least one of them should be right for your dvd player.
