I have 2 different magnets, one weak fridge magnet and one strong magnet, how close can it get to cd's and dvd's without ruining it? How close can they get to electronics?

As close as you like to CDs and DVDs. These use reflection or non-reflection of laser light, not magnetic effects. The only devices you're likely to have that could be affected by magnets are credit cards, cash cards and the like which have a magnetic strip, floppy disks which are magnetic, VHS and cassette tapes and mechanical watches like Rolexes;some of their moving parts are made of magnetic material. Integrated circuit electronics won't be affected by a magnetic field. People with pacemakers need to worry about MRI scans because the magnets in these machines are much more powerful than the magnets you've got. Oh yeah cathode ray tube colour TVs behave funny when you bring a magnet up to the screen, but they come right after a few hours.

Seems to me that they won't have any affect. CD's and DVD's are optical storage media. I am not an expert, but unless there are magnetic markers embedded within the disk for some reason, regular magnets will have not be able to effect ;-) any change in the disk. Any engineers out there familiar with the manufacture of optical disks? Strong magnets might have an affect on magnetic storage media (credit card stripes, etc) though.

As long as you don't use the magnet to scratch the surface of the CD or DVD, as close as you want to put them. Don't try that with anything like a video tape or music tape because it will erase them!

The only serious problem with magnets vs. electronics may be if you hold it too close to the TV screen, it'll make pretty colors appear on the screen that won't go away.

Other than that - have fun.

Ideally u must keep them away from the flux range. We use very weak magnets in our household so no need to worry unless or untill u keep those on the magnet itself.

Magnets affects badly to cassettes but not to cd dvd so much

CD's and DVD's use light reflected off the underside of the top surface of the disc. Magnetics will not effect them whatsoever. They will affect CRT television screens and magnetic tapes, bank cards, ect.

CDs and DVDs aren't magnetic, they're encoded with an optical dye. So don't worry about it. What magnets will mess up is your hard drive.

magnets dont spoil CDs/DVDs......but paul they sure can ruin hardisks, floppys, tapes and CRT screens, monitors ........

hope tht helped :-))
