Question:
What can I do to stop my neighbors CB and HAM radio from interfering with my TV, radios and phone?

A couple years ago my neighbor put up a 50 foot tall antenna for his Cb and HAM radio. Since then I can clearly hear his side of his radio conversations on my TV and am/fm radios. Recently his voice has been coming through on my cordless phones as well.

I have searched online and can not find any record of him having a license to operate at the watts he is using. I have filed complaints with the FCC, local code enforcement and the local building department. Aside form making him get a permit for the antenna, nothing has happened. Every time I talk to the FCC they say I have to wait for the complaint to get to my local office.

I have gotten used to watching TV with his voice in the background, but my wife works out of our home and is on the phone most of the day and has had many clients ask "Who is that guy that I hear in th background?". I am afraid that she could lose her job, but am told there is nothing I can do.

I have talked to the neighbor, he has tried different setting and radios, but with no change. He says that he is perfectly legal and will not stop playing on the radios. Is there anything else I can do?

Is this guy a real licensed amateur radio operator? If he is, then it is his responsibility by law to help you get rid of the interference. If he is not, he is an illegal CB operator (my guess is that he is illegal if he is not helping you - a real ham would bend over backwards to help you with this).

If he is an illegal operator, try calling your district FCC office. Every major city in the US has one (New York, LA etc).

I doubt very much he is a CB and HAM radio operator. No self respecting ham would be caught dead on the CB band.

If you let us know where you live, maybe we can help more. My e-mail is in my profile.

It is a sticky situation.

IF he is a CB'er and they are using high power or illegal radios , then they have the choice, fix the problem, stop using the radios, or be fined by the FCC. (big fines)

Case closed - thats simple.

If he is a licensed ham radio operator, then , as a previous answerer said , he will do whatever he can to help you fix the problem - thats for sure.

No doubt if a complaint to the FCC has been made then at some time a representative will visit this guy (assuming he is a ham) and do some checks to make sure that his equipment is correct.

Now , it is possible that there is some problem on his end , so the FCC guy will recommend what to do and he will carry out the instructions.

If thats the case, then everything should be resolved and everyone is happy.

BUT...

You have to realize that interference problems to your equipment may be YOUR fault, and not his.

The standards of modern household electronic devices, TV's, stereos , PC's , phones, etc , are no where high enough so as to prevent radio frequency interference.

Simply put, your devices may be low quality and not able to reject these signals properly and typically, the telephones themselves are the problem.

If thats the case, it is your choice to either put up with the interference, or buy better quality gear.

That may sound harsh , but really , should the ham neighbor be penalized because you bought equipment from manufacturers that isn't good quality.?

Obviously not.

First step IS . ask if he is a ham and what his call-sign is.

Ask to see his papers.

If he is a ham, work something out together.

Of course handling this in a friendly way will yield the best and fastest results.

If he's turns out to be an illegal CB'er , get him busted.

it depends. if the guy is a legit Ham operator or a CB operator. i dont know how you know what watts hes using. but sometimes bleed is natural. and unfortunately their is nothing you can do if hes a ham. If he is a CB operator running legal power their is nothing you can do. Running legal power probably wont bleed onto a tv though. just the computer speakers. all your equipment in the house has a sticker on it somewhere that says "must accept all interference" or something to that effect. so it is VERY difficult to do anything about these problems. my guess is he is a CB operator not a ham since you can understand him. hams generally talk on SSB which would not come through clear. getting through to the FCC is really all that will solve your problem.

Suggest that the guy visit my new page www.The11thMeter.com to try and figure out how to lessen the interference and give him another place to talk about his hobby.
