Handheld CB radio VS walkie-talkie. Which has better range?
Hi I have some midland 35 mile 5 watt walike talkies and I'm thinking about trying out some CB radios. I know the midland has a 5 watt transmitter and the most powerful CB has a 4 watt. But on a cb you can get bigger antennas. Walkie-talkie you can't so I was wondering would a handheld 4...

bigger antenna? a full quarter wave at UHF gmrs or frs is seven inches. on CB band it is 108 inches! have you ever seen someone walking around with a 9 foot tall antenna from his HT? the typical CB HT uses a 24 inch helical which is quite in-efficient in radiation characteristic. i have never heard of anyone getting 35 mile range on a CB HT so it would not be better than what you have.

CB would get a lot better range, not just because of the antennas but also because it operates AM and it's range isn't based on line of sight like the FM handhelds. You might not even get close to that 35 mile range unless your on top of something really tall. Although if you can get in range of a repeater than you can increase your range up to around 50-100 miles, since it's duplex though you will have to set on of the midlands to the Input frequency and the other to the output.

A "walkie talkie" is ANY and ALL Hand Held radios!
A handheld CB *is* a walkie talkie.
The "5 Watt" Midland radio I have reviewed, and it is impossible for that radio to have that power output, based on the battery power.
The Handheld CB will have better range in open areas, due to it's frequency ramge. The Midland radio will have MUCH better range inside buildings.
By the Way... The Midland radios *REQUIRE* an FCC issed GMRS license, which costs $85 for 5 years. You can use these radios legally(without a license) ONLY if you use the 500 mW FRS-only channels.
