You should be able to connect your GPS to your computer through USB and save your current map before you install the new one. Actually, you can have both maps, but the memory left would be so little your GPS could give you problems (not enough memory to calculate directions, etc). The map is the only large file inside your GPS folders. Just treat it as any other file; cut and paste. You could even save it to the GPS's SD card and take it with you for easy access. --------------------------------------... Hope it helps

It might. You should be able to back up anyways. Really, I wouldn't worry. in two years, you might want a new map update anyways, if not a whole new GPS unit.

There are also free maps available at http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/catalogue.php and http://downloads.cloudmade.com/, but most will not do turn by turn routing.

You do not have to "hack" your unit. You can buy maps to install on your device.
