You will need to install a TV card. You can buy that in computer stores. Its a small piece of hardware that you can install in your CPU. Yes, you can be able to record TV shows because it also comes with a software that will let you do so. The card can also be configured to get reception from antenna or cable. If you are using cable, then the reception should be as clear as that in the real TV. Try googling for PC TV.
Although I am not recommending any brand to you, the following URL will give you an idea on which type to buy:
Just a friendly advice, if you are not a techy person, then I suggest that you find one that can do the job right because PC hardware as senstive. If you don't know what you are doing, you might end up with broken hardwares. That will cost you more.

I personally purchased a Hauppauge pvr-150. It works great to watch and record shows. The correct version for you may vary, but I also spoke to peeps before I purchased mine and was advised I'd love it--And I do. Once you install software with disc, you open your computer tower and put it in the device (simple instructions included); then run coax cable from device to your cable/satellite box (Coax must be purchased seperately). However, there are newer models that are connected via USB. Circuit City carries these items varying @$100 and up. I would research which model is best for you at www.hauppauge.com. Oh, if you plan on recording shows via computer with this device and watching them later on tv instead of pc, you will need a sound card which runs you $150 and up. Hope I helped.
