Question:
Converting 230v 30a A/C plug into 120v outlet?

Hi,

We bought an air conditioner (Frigidaire Model #FAH146S2) with a 230v 30a plug and now have moved to a building that only has 120v outlets (vertical pins).

Is it possible to convert the plug? Does someone make such an adapter?

I believe the plug is called a Type "B" plug, meaning the two live pins are horizontal plus the ground/earth pin (see pictures in the link)

Here are pictures of the A/C and plug:

Personally I'm not confident converting the plug can be done, but it would be such a waste to give up such a great A/C, so I thought it couldn't hurt to ask.

Thanks,
Roland Thomas

no. If you try you will blow the breaker and you might ruin the air conditioner. You cannot do this because it doesn't have sufficient voltage. However you could create a line from the breaker to give you 240v and your proper current. This will need you to run more wires through your house because the wire the 110 uses cannot be put on a 240v circuit because it will over heat and might catch fire. Also If you decide to get electrical work done call an electrician.

Is there no 120V outlet in your garage? The easiest thing would be to run an extension cord from that. As for the 220V, that might be a dryer plug or stove plug. If the place was a machine shop previously, maybe it's 3-phase, but I doubt it. Get a voltmeter and measure - there might be a neutral in that plug, and you could wire from there to one of the hot wires and get 120 volts.

industrial control supply have a converter transformer for this purpous.

make sure the circuit(120 v socket) can handle the power this would use. the current consumption of the A/C unit would slightly more than

double on the primary(120 v) side.
