A palm pilot or "Personal Digital Assistant" is a handheld computer that serves as an organizer for personal information. It generally includes at least a name and address database, to-do list and note taker. PDAs may be combined with cellphones and other wireless technologies, providing a mobile office for people on the go.

PDAs are pen based and use a stylus to tap selections on menus and to enter printed characters. The unit may also include a small on-screen keyboard which is tapped with the pen. Data are synchronized between the PDA and desktop computer via cable or wireless transmission.

A PDA is like a palmtop computer except that the PDA typically uses a pen whereas the palmtop uses a small keyboard. Apple's MessagePad, more commonly known as the "Newton," was the pioneer in this field in 1993. However, PalmPilots, introduced a couple years after, popularized the technology.

It used to be just a Personal Information Manager, but with the newer models having faster processors, more memory, and better screen resolutions, you can actually do a whole lot more than just manage your contacts and calendar. I have setup many users with their Palm Pilots with the following capabilities:

- Web browsing

- Email

- Office document editing

- Instant Messenging

- Offline Maps and Driving Directions

- Play video and audio files

- Foreign Language dictionaries

- Remote Control for TVs and other devices

- Remote access and control to computers

- FTP capabilities

- Web feed reading

- Ebook reading

- Blogging capabilites

- Minor Photo editing

That's just to name a few...If you search the web enough, you can find software (Some free some commercial) that can do these things. I don't take my laptop with me when I go on trips, I just bring my Palm! Good Luck!

Love my palm! My calendar. My address book. Lists, lists, lists: things to do today, tomorrow, dream projects, garden, who's borrowed what from me, titles of books to get from the library, titles of videos to rent, titles of movies that sound interesting, titles of music to look for at the used music place. Shopping lists. Directions to places. Notes on people's kids' names, family sizes, stuff I should remember but don't. Calculator. Games. Easy to use, weighs next to nothing.

But mine is old, with no internet access. But soon I'll get a new one -- can't wait!
