Question:
What could be causing my output sound to show up on my input sound?

Any sound that my computer processes to send out, either to speakers, headphones, or whatever, and regardless whether anything is actually plugged in, I will get the sound in my input (microphone slot). I realized it first when people said they could hear my music when I talked on Ventrilo while I had music playing. Now I'm seeing it affecting me trying to record through my microphone jack. I have my guitar plugged into it and I'm using headphones so there's no way the output sound is reaching the input externally.

most likely there is a short in one of the cables, one of the wires from speakers, touching one from the mic....

Follow your cables along and see if you can check if this is possible.. wiggle and bend them and it might go away.

or the sound card could have a short in it... you might need a new one.

I would go to walmart or best buy and buy a shelf stereo system. Make sure whatever you buy has auxillary inputs (red & white rca connections) on the back. You will take the red & white rca cables from your Xbox or dvd player and plug them into the aux input on the back of the stereo and that should do it. If you don't want to keep switching cables on the back of the stereo you can buy an audio/video selector and you will just have to push a button to switch between the xbox and dvd player. If you go this route you will need to buy at least one set of rca cables to go from the selector to the stereo.

under your control panel goto sound and change the preferences or check the plugs to see if in right spot
