Recommend two players, Mx player and VidOn player, they are free and play all video formats. they support FTP Server, Windows sharing service, UPnP, and so on, no adds, no in-app purchases. Hope this helps.

Mx player obviously... It allows u to increase volume and brightness , subtitles , I wouldn't recommend vlc cause its still in beta unstable mode... U have to take ur own risk!

I'm partial to mxplayer, however if you can get vlc beta (not available in north america) that is the way to go.
