I have unmarked media and I cannot tell which of them are CDs and which are DVDs. I am looking for any indications on the medium that might identify its nature.

apparently dvds will have a purple-blue sheen while a CD will have a silvery sheen.

DVD recordables are typically purple on their usable surface. CDs are typically silver, green, blueish, or yellow.

Most burning software can detect media type. You can select disc info for example in Nero.
