I do not want a generator or a gas powered unit, or anything like that. Im looking for a rechargeable battery that gives a sustainable output.

My situation is that my mom works for Goodwill, as one of the donation receiver in those truck trailer. And she has no source of power or electricity. We are located here in South FLorida, and as you can imagine it gets quite hot. Ive been trying to look for some sort of portable battery supply with 120 V output for her to power perhaps a small fan or small cooler. I don't want a generator because of the noise, and exhaust fumes, could arise problems with her employers and/or the customers. Does anyone have any idea that could help me. The only things i can come across are those emergency backup power supplies that provide power to a computer, which gives you a couple of minutes to safely save and shutdown your computer. Im looking for something that can provided sustainable power for several hours. Thanks for any idea or help if any

There are some small 12 volts fans that plug into the car's cigarette lighter (auto stores). You could use a medium size 12 Volt battery (3"x4"x4") that could run the fan for a few hours (Radio Shack; mouser.com; digikey.com).

A cooler would take more power, you may need a motorcycle battery for that.

In either case you would have to recharge the battery daily, so you need to an appropriate charger.

Go to mouser.com, select Power, then Batteries and then Battery Chargers.

If the fan consumes 1 amp, then a 10Ah battery would run the fan for 10 hours, then its voltage would be low an needs to be charged.

An example from mouser.com:

you could use several things.

if you want something lightweight that fits in your pocket, i suggest this:

if your looking for a bigger battery, you could look on http://www.duracellpower.com/

or search google(shopping) for powerpack.

btw: the emergency power source that you mentioned is called a UPS, you cannot use a UPS while it is unplugged, because of "floating ground"(floating ground is what you get when you unplug the third thing in the top/middle of a plug.)
