Question:
What form should files be in when burned to a DVD to make that DVD work in a typical DVD player?

Very simple: I have a number of MP4 files that I want to burn to a DVD, and use that DVD in a conventional player hooked up to a TV. Should the files remain as MP4, or should they be converted to another format? If so, what format? And is there an open source file conversion program to do that if needed? Thanks.

The files need need to be converted to DVD files. DVD is basically MPEG2, but the files are wrapped as .vob and .ifo files. The disc needs to be written in the standard video DVD format, unless your DVD player can play DivX or XviD files. In that case, you can just burn these file types to a disc as data and play them.

DVD Flick is good free software for burning standard video DVDs from many different formats.

Oh, a typical dvd players only recognize standard video dvd format well, so if you want to convert and burn MP4 files to dvd to work well in a typical DVD player, you just need to use a right program to convert the mp4 files to standard video dvd format then burn to a dvd disc, I don't know what is open source, but I used RZ DVD Creator to do that well, if you will, you can have a try, it can convert any formats video files to standard video dvd and burn to any dvd disc(DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-R DL, DVD+R DL, etc), such as convert mp4 files to standard video dvd and burn to dvd disc, etc, easy to use, insert a dvd disc into your computer dvd burner drive, run RZ DVD Creator, select the dvd burner drive as the target folder, then drag and drop the mp4 files into the program, then press the START button, you will get a right standard video dvd, and you can play the burned dvd well in a typical DVD player. You can yahoo or google search and download RZ DVD Creator, easy to use, hope it could help you !

To burn MP4 files to a DVD which can be played on home DVD player, you will need a DVD Authoring tool. Remember just copy the movie to a DVD disc, it will actually not read by DVD players.

I am using a tool which is able to burn MP4 and many other videos to DVD easily.
