Question:
My soldering iron won’t melt solder?

I have an ECG JSSA2 and it won’t heat up unless it is all the way at max heat. Once I turn it down to a t minimum (the melting point if the slolder I use) it won’t heat anything. I’ve tried warming it up for a long time.
What should I do?

Keep it at the hotter setting.

The tip could be dirty, oxidized, or damaged.

i think its DIMMER circuit is bad ... disconnect the iron wires and connect a 50 watts filament bulb to it..... turn the volume to see the changing light of the bulb ...

maybe bad diac .....D1....as you told ..it fires only at angles 0 and 180 degrees ..not lower than them......

Many possible reasons....

[1] Loosing socket connection between solder station to soldering iron, fix it.

[2] Soldering station variable voltage power supply becomes bad, open it and start trouble shooting.

1. clean tip with very fine grit sandpaper (200/270 -be careful to only remove solder from tip not coating ) loosen set screw push in tip until fully inserted then re-tighten set screw 2.Turn the dial to the lowest temperature and switch the iron ON.wait 1-2 minutes to reach temp. then

Touch the solder to the tip – nothing happens.

Now turn the temperature up one division and wait a minute.

Try the solder again. Keep doing this until the solder melts very slowly.

Now increase the temperature 20°C to 30°C (about one division) and you have the perfect temperature for delicate soldering. It will melt the solder quickly but not burn-up the rosin too quickly.

You will find the temperate on the dial will be very close to 370°C (700°F).

Have you ever cleaned or replaced the tip? Try that first.

Throw it away and buy a new one.

Replace it with a Weller.

A soldering gun that won't heat solder isn't much of a soldering gun. Get it fixed or buy a new one. Did you really have to ask that question?

I don't know what circuitry is inside the unit, but maybe it's not working.

That station is 50 watts, which is plenty for electronics use.

Look at the output voltage of the circuit with a voltmeter or oscilloscope.

Contact NTE for a schematic diagram of the temperature control circuitry for your J-SSA-2 soldering station.
