Is there a good emergency communications radio?

I go 4 wheeling where there is no cell service and I bought a CB, but it seems like there is not enough people on or close enough for that to be much good in an emergency situation. Is there a radio or communications device that would be helpful in this situation? Should I amplify my CB and only use it in an emergency situation (don't care about the law in a life or death emergency)? What about a HAM? I'm not going to get my license, but in a life or death situation would that be helpful?
thanx for any help.

CB, GMRS and FRS have their place but have limited technology and ability.

On the other hand, Ham Radio (aka Amateur Radio) has amazing gear and skilled licensed radio operators. And motivated children as young as six years old have earned a license. Give it a shot, Ham Radio lets you communicate across town or around the planet.

GMRS maybe, but like CB, you need the resources there to communicate with.

Amateur radio requires a license, as does GMRS, but GMRS is just a simple payment, Amateur radio is a test of technical and operating knowledge. operating licensed services with no license will put yo in peril if fines and equipment confiscation.

Buddy system.

always travel with a buddy, that way if one gets stuck, the other can run back for help. if cell service doesn't work then it is unlikely that police or ham frequencies will work either when you drop off the edge of the communications infrastructure.
