Ordinary TV or DVD is 480 lines. i.e. the number of lines used to display the image is 480. HD is 1080 lines. This is more than twice the lines as ordinary DVD to display the image. because of this the image is more dense or clear. This picture quality difference becomes very obvious on large TVs. You would need HD disc to store HD DVD. Both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD hold high definition videos. But over time one format will remain standing. We dont know yet who it will be either Blu-Ray or HD- DVD.

Pretty simply the HD DVD and BluRay DVD holds more info on disc (More layers) thus producing better picture when displayed on screen. Especially a HD TV (1080p Resolution).
From what I've seen selling these machines, the HD DVD seems to have a nicer, sharper picture than BluRay! Go figure that, when BluRay is suppose to be 5 times more info than DVD, and HD DVD only 3 times! Plus a lot cheaper.
Advantage: Stunning!!

Both blu ray and HD-DVD are capable of holding large amounts of video. They both hold more data then regular dvd discs do and so as a result, you get much superior sound and video quality.
Bluray has a slightly better picture quality than HD-DVD because it can hold more video. The more video a disc can hold, the better the quality. However, you also will need a good HDTV with HDMI inputs to be able to view Bluray and HD-DVDs with their respective players.
