Is there different quality picture/sound? When converting from a VOB file, which format will take up more memory?

MPEG4 is a file format specification and H264 is a codec (video translation formulae) used within the MPEG format. h264 is the STANDARD for mpeg4 but may others are used most unique to one software only.
its not about most memory but maximum compatibility. the differences in size are nominal (its the compression ration and screen size that determine file size) but if it wont play - then size is irrelevant.
AVI is NOT and open format, neither is RAM, WMV or other proprietary formats. in fact AVI causes more problems than any other format there are so many type of AVI that 50% will not play without add-ons to the system some of which expose the machine to trojans.

K-lite Codec Pack is the solution if you have any problem with codec. You can download it for free here http://j.mp/1kl9y6q
If you are unable to watch video or you can't open any files (avi, mp4, divx, etc...) it's very likely that your computer doesn't have right codecs. You need to install K-lite Codec Pack to fix the issue.

MP4 is a container, H.264 a codec(coder / decoder), the quality depends on the bitrate that you choose. the audio also depends on what codec you choose.
