Harvey Hubbell came up with the idea for an electrical power plug in 1904, eliminating the need to wire devices directly to their power source. The modern design for electrical outlets and plugs used in the United States was standardized by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, or NEMA, which was founded in 1926.
