The other answers are correct (if a regular fax machine isn't connected to the phone line, anyone trying to send you a fax will just get a "ring, no answer"). But there is an alternative that works the way you're asking. I use a service from FaxLogic called "Personal 100 Pro". It lets me connect my fax machine to the FaxLogic network instead of the phone company network. Everything still works the way it always has (and I got to keep my fax number of 10+ years), but it costs only $15 a month instead of the $45 a month I was paying for my business phone line; note that FaxLogic also has a $10 a month plan that does the same thing, but I use the $15 plan because I also want the fax-to-email functions). Anyway, to your point about receiving faxes when your fax machine is disconnected, the FaxLogic service does this. Your fax machine is connected to FaxLogic via your existing Internet connection, through a little box that you buy once for $50 when you sign up (which in my case, paid for itself after one month of not paying for my phone line). The beauty of FaxLogic service is that if your machine is disconnected from their box, or your power is out, or your machine is out of paper, anything that someone sends you gets "queued" by FaxLogic. As soon as your machine is ready to go again, anything you've received in the mean time is then sent to your machine. The same is true if you are sending a fax or if more than one person is sending you a fax at the same time (they call this "never busy fax"). All in all, a great value and one I can highly recommend. By the way, what I do is have all my incoming faxes go to my email (that's the benefit of the extra $5 to upgrade to the "pro" plan), so I can get them from anywhere (I actually get my faxes on my iPhone) and I can choose what to print out, rather than having everything I get automatically printed.

No. A Fax is direct machine to machine, not store and forward like Email.

With the machine of or disconnected, the sending party will just get no answer/

No. If the machine is off line when a document is sent,

it will have none of the information that was sent to it.

Said document needs to be re-sent. If you are expecting

an important document from someone and you think

that you might have missed it, it would be a good idea

to call that someone and find out if same was sent.

Usually, a fax machine will not send a document if your

fax machine is not on line. A working fax machine will

answer the line and send the correct signal(s) to the

machine that called to proceed with the transmission

of document(s).

If your fax machine store fax in memory, it shall print all the fax after reconnect.

The cheap type older Fax machine without a memory, then all fax shall be gone after disconnect.
